Children think mathematically long before they start formal school. Everyday activities and routines are used to introduce and develop important mathematical ideas and number sense, for example, exploring shapes with wooden blocks, sorting the cooked muffins from smallest to largest and counting the number of plates needed for lunch. Educators teach children numeracy skills through everyday interactions and formal instruction through small groups that involve using board games to explore number concepts, dice to explore addition and subtraction, looking at patterns to identify what is the same and different. Educators use curriculum and teaching practices that strengthen children’s problem-solving and reasoning processes as well as representing, communicating, and connecting mathematical ideas. Kids Cottage preschoolers have access to a range of resources and materials to explore and practise mathematical concepts.
