STEM @ KC

STEM @ KC

STEM is another acronym that has emerged with great popularity.

It stands for:
Science
Technology
Engineering
Maths

Put simply STEM is an approach to learning that integrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics to help students think in a more connected and holistic way.

Advances in technology and increased automation has seen changes in the new jobs that are emerging. Technological advances have also transformed how students learn, connect and interact. STEM integrated learning, provides the foundation and empowers children to adapt to our changing world and succeed at school and beyond.

How does this relate to preschool aged children…the short answer is lots!

Through STEM, children learn to:
• ask questions
• work together
• think creatively
• solve problems
• explore
• take calculated risks
• test solutions
• discover new ways of doing things

STEM learning is important for everyone and can happen anytime, anywhere. The real life skills that develop when learning STEM help make everyone better problem solvers and learners.
At KC we focus on STEM through exploration, play, and building curiosity about the natural world and the way things work.

Using a play-based pedagogy, our children can be given the opportunity to investigate, manipulate and experiment with a wide range of resources and materials that develop the concepts, skills and dispositions that are important for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

With a  ‘focus on fun’ approach to delivering all experiences at KC, the possibilities for incorporating fun into STEM education are endless. Young children are naturally curious about the world and love to learn through play. Activities that involve experimentation, discovery, building or collecting things are great ways to teach our students.

Hands on, learning by doing, experiential learning, and practical inquiry processes make STEM experiences more fun, easier to engage with content and facilitates the development of necessary skills for younger students.

When children ask questions, they are developing their critical thinking skills and building their STEM capabilities. When they ask Why? We respond with alternative questions and ideas, and encourage them to search for answers and solutions themselves. Encouraging our children to ask questions, we allow them to take an active role in their own learning and helping them understand the world around them.
